Historically Black Colleges to Merge With White Colleges in Georgia

Public colleges created during segregation to provide blacks an education denied to them by white institutions are at the center of a budget battle brewing in Georgia.

Facing a $2 billion shortfall, a Republican state senator has proposed merging two of the historically black schools with nearby predominantly white colleges to save money and, in the process he says, erase a vestige of Jim Crow-era segregation. Read the rest underneath.

Black Coaches in College Football

Eddie Robinson coached for 56 years -- all at Grambling! When he retired, he had more wins than any other college coach, had sent more than 200 players to NFL camps and had graduated 80 percent of his players, back when football graduation rates across the country were around 50 percent. In spite of all that, Robinson not only was never offered a Division I-A job, but was never even offered an interview for a Division I-A university head coaching job.

I was getting ready to write something about this issue and just decided to let the facts and stats speak. FBS is what used to be known as Division I.

- 54% of FBS players are minorities (50 percent of all players are African-American)
-5.04% of FBS head coaches are minorities, 3.4% are African American
- 12.1% of offensive and defensive coordinators (31 of 255) and 30.4% of assistant coaches (312 of 1,018) are African American
- 4 African-American head coaches out of 119 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools (3.4%)
-92.5% of FBS university presidents, 87.5% of FBS athletic directors and 100% of FBS conference commissioners are white.

Read more about this issue, a recent example and graduation rates for Black student athletes underneath.

Tigers' Haphazard Search Leads to Chizik
Auburn hired Gene Chizik, a coach who went 5-19 in his two seasons as head coach at Iowa State, and ended the 2008 season with a 10-game losing streak.

Turner Gill, a former Nebraska quarterback, took over one of the country's worst programs at Buffalo three years ago and guided the Bulls to an 8-5 record and their first MAC championship this season, upsetting previously unbeaten Ball State conference championship game. The Buffalo Bulls won 10 games in their first seven seasons at the Division I-A level. Gill guided Buffalo to 13 victories during the past two seasons combined. He was one of at least 8 candidates to interview for the job.

Five wins in two years got Chizik an offer of a two-year contract extension at Iowa State. He reportedly will receive a five-year contract worth about $2 million a year from Auburn, about double his former deal which included a $750,000 buyout.

More Bowl-Bound Black Players Graduate
Of the 68 schools going to bowl games, 19 graduated less than 50 percent of black players, according to the report by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida. The number of black graduates grew from 55.5 percent to 59.1 percent.

A total of 76 percent of whites graduated compared with 59 percent of blacks in the study. Last year, 64 percent of whites and 50 percent of blacks graduated. Among bowl teams, only Oklahoma graduated less than half of its white players. Navy had the best overall football graduation rate among bowl teams at 95 percent and tied Notre Dame for the best among blacks with 93 percent. Arizona had the worst overall graduation rate, 41 percent, and among black players, 29 percent. Five schools had better rates for black players than white: Connecticut, Rutgers, Troy, Oklahoma and Florida.

The NCAA uses graduation rates as the primary factor in its Academic Progress Rating. If a school's APR drops below a certain level, it can be sanctioned, starting with losing scholarships and escalating to restrictions on practice time and postseason play. The formula considers a 50 percent graduation rate in each sport to be acceptable.

The study showed the graduation rate among all black males in the student body of the schools studied is 38 percent.

Preview Music: Various Rappers

View here. I really didn't know what else to use for a graphic.

I really intended to make these separate posts, but in the interest of time decided against it. Anyway, Jay's new BK Anthem, Kanye is rapping again, Luda's bonus cut, and Jada and Wayne go hard. Also got two mixtapes that aren't really mixtapes, Reasonable Gangster and a Cuban Linx 2 teaser. You already know.

Jay-Z -BK Anthem
This knocks, but it is heavily and obnoxiously tagged. Should hold the Jigga stans over until the CDQ hits.

Kanye feat Santogold - N.A.S.A.
No auto-tune on this. No sappy lyrics about heartbreak. Supposed to be a blend of North American and South American influences, hence N.A.S.A.

Luda - Start Button
Bonus cut of his Danish release. Danish is from Denmark. Not sure why they got the extra song. It's classic Luda with fun and witty punchlines. I actually had to run this one back.

Jadakiss feat Lil Wayne - Death Wish
J to the muah with the dude who actually kisses dudes. With that said, two decent verses from two cats people tend to check for a lot.

OB4CL2 Teaser
No, this is not the Cuban Linx 2 disc. That would definitely get a separate post from me. This is basically a collection of songs Rae has put together that might or might not make OB4CL2. You might have heard some of these, you might not have. Either way, its a decent consolidation.

Reasonable Gangster
Along the lines of the other American Gangster/Black Album tapes, this one blends AG verses over Reasonable Doubt instrumentals. Not just a simple overlay, but actually some production value here. Definitely worth a few spins for any Jay-Z fan.

Shamelessly jacked from NMC affiliates.

D.C. Bars and Nightclubs to Be Open 24-hours A Day for Inauguration Week

The D.C. Council approved emergency legislation yesterday evening (Dec 2) that will allow District bars, nightclubs and restaurants to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. -- three hours later than usual -- and remain open for food around the clock from Jan. 17 until the morning after Obama's swearing-in Jan. 20.

The bill was the brainchild of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington and was introduced by council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who represents nightlife-heavy neighborhoods of Adams Morgan and Mount Pleasant.

The council approved the bill 9 to 4. Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) was the only one who objected to the extra hours. But Graham, Carol Schwartz (R-At Large) and Muriel Bowser also voted against the bill, which originally excluded nightclubs at Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's request, after it was amended to include them.

With as many as three million people expected to come to Washington for the inaugural, the city must be meet their entertainment demands, Graham had said upon introducing the measure.

"I know a lot of people are excited about the inauguration and I share that excitement," Mendelson said. "But there are very few people I know of out partying at 5 in the morning or 4 in the morning who aren't getting drunk. I think there are going to be consequences to that.from a public safety and public order point of view. It's not a good policy to be supporting."

On a normal week, bars and nightclubs can serve alcohol until 2 a.m. on weekdays and until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The only day the city regularly extends normal drinking hours is Jan. 1, when bars are allowed to keep serving alcohol until 4 a.m.

But the legislation quickly drew the ire of civic leaders, who complained that the council did not seek public input. The new rules could create more noise and problems for residents, said activists who have fought for tougher restrictions on bars and restaurant.

"I see the potential for why you'd want to do it, in terms of this being a historic election, but to just throw this down on neighborhoods?" said Bryan Weaver, head of the Adams Morgan advisory neighborhood commissions. "To have 3 1/2 days of 24-hour service without any input from the community -- there's going to be hell to pay from a lot of neighborhood associations."

But Andrew Kline, general counsel for the restaurant association, said Obama's inauguration is a once-in-a-lifetime event that is worthy of special rules. He noted that spontaneous celebrations broke out on city streets until the early morning hours after Obama won the general election Nov. 4.

Kline said it was important for the council to pass the legislation quickly because bars and restaurants are in the process of booking private parties for inauguration week.

"It makes sense to have places for people to go when they're in a celebratory mood," Kline said. "It's just a few days. All of us are going to be somewhat inconvenienced, but that's outweighed by a wonderful historic event."

The move is not without precedent in other cities. During the Republican National Convention in St. Paul last summer, eight bars and restaurants were allowed to remain open two additional hours until 4 a.m.

Whether the D.C. law will require other agencies to alter their plans remains uncertain. Metro announced it would have extended service hours on inauguration day, from 4 a.m. Jan 20 through 2 a.m. Jan 21. Otherwise, the transit authority will run normal service, closing at midnight on weekdays and 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

"We're also working on extension of Metro hours," Graham said.

Face said that the only way he'll make another disc is if it's part of a super group. He mentioned one with NaS and Ice Cube, one with Jay and Beanie Sigel and a duo with Bun B. How dope would that be.

Michael Jackson Converts to Islam

I'm really falling off, I swear I put this up already. Anyway, MJ converted from Jehovah Witness to Islam a few weeks back. Not that I pay attention, but I'm surprised this didn't get more coverage in the media cycle. His brother Jermaine converted a while back but he didn't have anything to do with Michael's move. Story underneath.
